How It Works
The Cosmetology Certificate prepares you for the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology license examination with at least 1,600 hours of training. By the time you’re done, you’ll be ready for an entry-level job in Cosmetology with skills in professional development, salon ecology, anatomy and physiology, electricity, chemistry, salon business, trichology, design decisions, sculpture, hair design, wigs and hair additions, texture, color, nails and nail enhancements, skin care and make-up. You have to complete 50 units with a C grade or better in each course required.
Advisory: Must be 17 years of age when applying for State Board Exam
You’ll start the program with COSM 055AF, which includes 135 hours of lecture and 207 hours lab. This course includes basic hair styling, manicures, facials, day make-up, permanent waving, scalp treatments, hair cutting, tinting, bleaching and other subjects applicable to cosmetology. This class is authorized or required by statute or regulation or licensing agency.
Prerequisite(s): 10th grade education or equivalent.
This level, called COSM 055BF, entails 135 hours lecture and 207 hours lab. This course covers basic hairstyling, manicuring, pedicuring, acrylic nails with form, nail wraps, tips, mends/repairs, facials, make-up, permanent waving, scalp treatments, hair cutting, tinting, bleaching, soft permanent wave, sodium hydroxide chemical relaxing and other related subjects, as they are applicable to cosmetology.
Prerequisite(s): COSM 055AF with a grade of C or better
This level, called COSM 055CF, includes 99 hours lecture and 243 hours lab. You will learn hair design, manicuring and pedicuring, acrylic nails, nail repair, facials and corrective make-up, scalp and hair treatments, hair sculpture, hair color design, chemical texturizing, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, curl reformation and other related subjects, as they are applicable to cosmetology.
Prerequisite(s): COSM 055BF with a grade of C or better.
This course, titled COSM 055CF, 99 hours lecture and 243 hours lab per term. You’ll learn hair design, manicuring and pedicuring, acrylic nails, nail repair, facials and corrective make-up, scalp and hair treatments, hair sculpture, hair color design, chemical texturizing, permanent waving, chemical relaxing, curl reformation and other related subjects.
Prerequisite(s): COSM 055BF with a grade of C or better.
This course, called COSM 055EF, includes 72 hours lecture and 288 hours of lab per term. This course includes salon thermal hair curling, salon hair sculpting, permanent wave design, salon color design, salon chemical relaxing-sodium hydroxide, salon nail sculpture, salon facials and related subjects. You’ll also start preparing for the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology with mock written and performance exams.
